WORKS PARTY 10:30 Sat 2nd MAY FOR TWO HOURS. NO FLYING DURING THIS TIME.

IMPORTANT – UPCOMING SITE WORK

As you may be aware, there is a high-pressure fuel pipeline running under our flying field which is part of a national fuel distribution network. This is maintained and managed by a company called Fisher German, with the ultimate custodians being ESSO.

Late last year, Fisher German requested an onsite meeting with Bickley MFC committee, to discuss some important works that are needed to the section of pipeline under our field. They explained that a section of pipe requires attention, and that excavation works on the runway area would unfortunately be necessary. We have since been working with everyone involved to try to minimise the impact to our flying activities and hopefully keep flying throughout the works.

This is what we currently know:

  1. A trench approximately 6x3x2 meters deep will need to be dug near the pilots’ box, as per the diagram below. Other excavations may be necessary, depending on findings. All excavations will be fenced off to prevent anyone falling in. As the plant will be inside the fence, the fence perimeter will likely be considerably bigger than the excavation itself.
  2. The works are expected to begin on or around 9th February 2026 and last approximately two week.
  3. It is currently believed that normal club flying activities can continue during the works.
  4. It may not be possible to fly particularly fast or large models, due to restricted landing space, but that will depend on numerous factors, including wind direction on the day.
  5. We will likely move the current Pilots’ Box further down (south) the field.

Any of the above may of course change due to unforeseen circumstances

Ultimately, the pipeline forms part of UK Critical National Infrastructure, and Fisher German and their associates have an absolute legal right to access our field to commence any works necessary. Thus, our focus has been on ensuring the inevitable works are undertaken as quickly as possible with minimal impact. We have firm commitments from all to return the field to at least the standard it is currently in, and the greenkeeping team have been involved in all discussions.

If you attend the field during the works, please acquaint yourself with the site layout to ensure yours and everyone’s safety, and always use common sense.

Please see below (very!) rough site plan.

Your co-operation on this matter is much appreciated.

Regards

BMFC Committee
